We had several winners of Bingo, and three students who completed the entire card and won a super goodie bag (which contained mostly candy, hot cheetos, these really cool “READ” temporary tattoos, and a few other things).
There were a lot more participants than winners, which is excellent. Also, not all winners filled out an “I’m a winner!” sheet.
I would definitely do this again, and hope I get to!
Library Bingo got off to a slow start, but now that the deadline is looming, it has really picked up! I have only had one person go for “blackout” (the whole card), but a lot of students that have been able to get Bingo. This has been great because I have seen students who never used to casually stop by the library come in more often. I am especially happy with the participation of the 7th graders (mostly thanks to the 7th grade Reading teacher’s offer of extra credit and encouragement).
We will see the final outcome on Friday!
I am shamelessly stealing school librarian Jenny Frencham‘s idea and running a Library Bingo program this quarter.
I have done little more than to modify her Bingo card. Mine can be found here: Library Bingo Card. The flier can be found here: Library Bingo flier.
There are so many positive elements to this that I cannot even begin to list them all. Students recommending books to each other, students reading under-utilized genres (e.g. Nonfiction!), students (hopefully) getting excited to come to the library, I am trying to get to all the English classes to talk this up. So far the 7th graders are enthused, the 8th graders not so much, and the seniors are apathetic — although I do have one senior who is already halfway done!
We will see how this plays out….
This year I decided to try what I have been hearing about from other libraries — a blind date with a book program.
I selected several good books that were under-circulated, and created description cards (see Valentines Blind Date Books). Next I wrapped them in red and pink butcher paper, and after cutting off the titles from the cards, taped the cards to the front.
I put them out this week for Valentine’s Day, and they have been getting checked out! It remains to be seen whether they will all go home with someone by the weekend.
